Depending upon your school, you may be expected to earn credits for professional development. Although you may be employed in an International school that is relatively free of some of the requirements and bureaucracy in many state- side schools, you may have a teaching certificate granted by a college, university, or state department that requires renewal. You can search the state where you obtained your certificate and determine the requirements. In general, requirements may be met with the following options. If you hold a license, certificate, or diploma from another country such as Britain, Canada, or Australia, there are likely requirements for professional development. You may find information that may affect you by contacting appropriate authorities in your home country.
The Semester/Quarter
Credit Option (One quarter credit usually equals 2/3 semester credit;
for example, 9 quarter credits equal 6 semester credits).
This option may include
independent study courses, correspondence courses, or other courses offered
for credit by an approved institution. The coursework selected for
the renewal of your license/certificate may be required to have a direct
relationship to the subject area of one or more of the licenses/certificates
you hold, or to your professional competence demonstrated in some other
way. You may need to have such credits preapproved by the agency.
The Equivalency Clock
Hour Option
In the United States the
continuing education or professional education unit (CEU) may be accepted
by completing a specific number of equivalency clock hours in approved
non-credit activities such as workshops, seminars, conferences, or conventions.
Requests for approval of clock hours for non-credit activities must be
submitted to the department in advance of the scheduled activities.
Combination Semester
Credits and Equivalency Clock Hours
Some combination of credit
and CEU may be accepted. In some form of combination there are a variety
of approaches that may
be considered with support of your administration.
